Description

Presidential elections are held in Finland every six years as direct, popular elections. Statistics Finland produces official statistics from the elections. The preliminary statistics are published on the Internet, in the StatFin online service and on the statistics pages on Presidential elections as soon as possible starting from the election night. The second data, or the final data are supplied to Statistics Finland after the election result is confirmed. After the confirmation of the election result, the confirmed data corresponding to the preliminary statistics are released on the statistics pages on the Internet and the StatFin databases are updated.

Detailed data on presidential elections (since 1994) can be found on Statistics Finland’s website on the specific page designated for them in the list of statistics by topic, and since 1994 in the StatFin online service.

Statistics Finland receives the basic data for the elections from the Ministry of Justice’s election information system, the technical implementation of which it has assigned to Tieto Group. Statistics Finland’s election data system comprises two election data files: regional file and candidate file.

Data content

The statistics consist of the first and second rounds of the elections of the President of the Republic. The main content includes: the numbers and proportions of votes cast for the presidential candidates separated into votes cast in advance voting and on the actual election day, information on the numbers of those entitled to vote and those who voted by gender, numbers of advance voters by gender. Statistics Finland’s election data system consists of two election files: area file and candidate file. The data are public.

Data collection methods and data sources

The Ministry of Justice’s election information system, the technical implementation of which it has assigned to TietoEnator Group. Statistics Finland receives the basic data on the elections from that company. The data are transmitted as an electronic data transfer from the election information system already on the election night for production of preliminary statistics. After confirmation of the election results, the confirmed results are supplied to Statistics Finland for compilation of the final election statistics. Information on advance voting is collected with forms from a few dozen municipalities not using the Ministry of Justice’s voting register.

The election year of the first and second rounds of each presidential election.

Time of completion or release

Preliminary statistics on the first and second rounds of the elections are produced on the election night after the actual election day and they are also immediately available on the Internet. Final statistics (as a conventional paper publication) are produced in the year following the election year.

Statistics are available from 1925 onwards.
