Women's average age in Finland is 42 and men's 39. According to statistics, their life expectancies at that stage are nearly equal at 41.7 years for women and 38.5 years for men. On the average, a woman in Finland enters her first marriage at the age of 30 and a man at the age of 32. A woman has her first child at the age of 28. The average family with children has 1.8 children.

The Eino H. Laurila national income medal for 2007 has been granted to Professor Matti Pohjola and MPolSc Jukka Jalava. Pohjola and Jalava have co-operated actively in national and international economic research, and been initiators of improvements to the content and usability of national accounts.

According to Statistics Finland's report Everyday Use of ICT in Finland 2006, more than three million persons aged between 15 and 74 used the Internet in spring 2006. Twenty-three per cent of Finns did not use the Internet at all. The proportion of Internet users is still clearly smaller in the oldest age groups than in the younger age groups. Of the different Internet uses, the reading of online newspapers, Internet phone calls, instant messaging, online banking and online shopping have increased the most. Six in ten Internet users reported reading online newspapers.

Mr Kari Lehto, Licentiate of Philosophy, has been appointed Director of IT Services in the IT and Statistical Methods Department for a five year term starting on 1 April 2007. Prior to this appointment Mr Lehto held the position of IT Manager at the Finnish Forest Research Institute.
