Numbers of enterprise closures declined in 2010

According to Statistics Finland, in 2010 the number of enterprise openings grew by over six per cent and that of enterprise closures fell by 18 per cent. Examined by industry, enterprise openings and closures increased most in the industry of trade, and by region in Uusimaa. The number of enterprise openings grew only in the regions of Central Finland, Central Ostrobothnia and Kainuu. The number of enterprise closures declined in all regions.

Enterprise openings and closures in 2010

According to Statistics Finland, 33,162 new enterprises opened in 2010. Enterprise openings accounted for 10 per cent of the total stock of enterprises in 2010. The number of enterprise openings increased by 6,2 per cent compared with 2009. The number of enterprise openings was highest in trade, where it totalled 5,738, or 17.3 per cent of all enterprise openings in 2010.

Enterprise closures numbered 21,299 in 2010. Enterprise closures accounted for 6,3 per cent of the total stock of enter-prises in 2010. The number of enterprise openings decreased by 18 per cent from 2009. The number of closures was highest in trade, where it totalled 4 348 enterprises (20.4%).

Examined by region, the highest numbers of both enterprise openings and closures were recorded in 2010 in Uusimaa (11,888 and 7,331, respectively). Compared with 2009, enterprise openings increased most in Uusimaa (480) and decreased most in Central Finland. The number of enterprise closures decreased most in Uusimaa (-2 035) and decreased least in Åland (-47).

Examined by sub-regional unit, the highest number of enterprise openings relative to the enterprise stock was recorded in 2010 in the sub-regional unit of Oulu (11.7%), and as an absolute number in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (11,036). The highest number of enterprise closures as a proportion to the enterprise stock was recorded in the sub-regional units of Äänekoski and Oulu (7.3%) and as absolute numbers in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (6,820).

Examined by ELY centre (Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment), the number of enterprise openings in 2010 was highest in the ELY centre of Uusimaa (11,888), followed by the ELY centre of Southwest Finland (3,087). Examined by ELY centre, the number of enterprise closures in 2010 was highest in the ELY centre of Uusimaa (7,331), followed by the ELY centre of Pirkanmaa (1,961).

Examined by municipality, the largest absolute growth of the enterprise stock was recorded in 2010 in Helsinki, where enterprise openings numbered 5,514 and enterprise closures 3,352. Compared with 2009, enterprise openings increased most in Helsinki (124) and decreased most in Kokkola (-28). The number of enterprise closures increased most in Taipalsaari (17) and decreased most in Helsinki (-1,019).

These numbers include changes in enterprises resulting from, among other things, incorporations and mergers.
