Total energy consumption grew by 11 per cent in the first half of the year

Total energy consumption amounted to 759 petajoule in the first half of 2006, which is nearly 11 per cent more than in the corresponding period of 2005. Carbon dioxide emissions of energy production and use grew by 10 per cent compared with the emissions one year ago. The main reason for the growth was the rise in energy consumption of industry from last year's low level. The growth was also significantly influenced by the increase in condensate production for energy supply. This is due to that fuels are used over 2.5-fold more in condensate production compared with the volume of electricity produced.

Except for hydro power, all the biggest energy sources were consumed more in January to June than at the same time last year. Consumption of coal and wood fuels grew most, by 34 and 30 per cent. Here coal also includes coke and blast furnace gas and coke oven gas. Use of peat and natural gas and net imports of electricity also increased clearly.
