Retail trade sales grew by 1.4 per cent in April

According to Statistics Finland, retail trade sales increased by 1.4 per cent last April from April 2011.The volume of sales, from which the impact of prices has been eliminated, went down by 2.2 per cent in retail trade over the same period. In daily consumer goods trade, sales grew by 1.6 per cent, while in department store trade sales went down by 2.4 per cent. Wholesale trade sales went up by 6.1 per cent. In motor vehicle trade, sales fell by 13.5 per cent year-on-year. In total trade, sales grew by 1.7 per cent in April.

In the January to April period, sales were up by 6.2 per cent in retail trade and by 7.5 per cent in wholesale trade on the respective period of the previous year. Motor vehicle trade sales were up by 12.3 per cent. In total trade, sales were up by 7.8 per cent in January to April on the respective period of the year before.

Amended motor vehicle tax legislation influences motor vehicle trade sales in 2012

An amendment concerning the motor vehicle tax that is levied at first registration entered into force on 1 April 2012. According to it, the amount of tax is now based on the volume of carbon dioxide emissions that correspond with the combined consumption of the vehicle. The tax on passenger cars and vans rises if the emissions exceed 110g/km. The impacts of the amended taxation on motor vehicle prices will also be seen in the development of motor vehicle trade sales in 2012.
