Use and comparability of data compiled by TOL 2008 and TOL 2002

During the transition period up to the middle of 2011, certain statistics will continue to publish data classified by TOL 2002. In cases where data series on turnover in trade produced by the old classification are used in conjunction with series produced by the new classification, data by the two classifications need to be combined.

Data on turnover in trade compiled by TOL 2002 and TOL 2008 can be compared against the following:

G, Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles, corresponds almost fully with TOL 2002 section G, Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles, motorcycles and personal and household goods.

The most significant change at the two-digit level is that retail sale of automotive fuel, which in TOL 2002 is class 505 under 50, Sale, maintenance and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles; retail sale of automotive fuel, movesunder 47, Retail trade, except of motor vehicles and motorcycles in TOL 2008.

Publishing of retrospective data by the TOL 2008 classification

Retrospective data starting from 1995 will be published by the new industrial classification from all data series on turnover in trade. Due to the change of base year, data for 2005 will be calculated from micro level data. Data for the years 1995-2004 and 2006-2008 will be formed by exploiting previous statistical data as such, weighting together already published time series or by genuinely recalculating the necessary time series.

The accuracy of the retrospective data formed for the years 1995-2004 is nearly as good as that of previously published corresponding data. The accuracy of the data for 2005-2008 does not change in connection with the classification and base year revision.

Further information about the impact of the classification revision on statistics describing turnover in trade

A news item about the adoption of TOL 2008 in statistics describing turnover in trade is posted on the home page of the statistics.

The effects of the new industrial classification on trade have also been discussed in the Fokus section of Industry Review 2/2008 (In Finnish only).
