Cubic volume covered by granted building permits grew by 16 per cent in March

In March 2010, building permits were granted for a total of 3.4 million cubic metres, which is 16 per cent more than one year earlier. This is indicated by Statistics Finland’s preliminary data from statistics on building and dwelling production.

The cubic volume covered by permits for residential buildings grew by nearly 75 per cent while the volume covered by permits for detached houses in particular doubled from the previous year’s March. The cubic volume covered by permits for industrial and warehouse buildings, in turn, decreased by 45 per cent from one year back.

In March 2010, building permits were granted for 2,400 new dwellings, which is around 65 per cent more than one year earlier. The number of permits granted for new detached houses doubled, and that of permits for terraced houses quadrupled from March 2009. The number of permits granted for residential blocks of flats went up by 11 per cent.I

Over the January to March period, the number of granted building permits grew by 14 per cent from the previous year. The cubic volume covered by permits for residential buildings almost doubled. Permits for industrial and warehouse buildings decreased by roughly one-fifth from twelve months back.

Volume of newbuilding contracted by nearly 5 per cent in March

In March 2010, ongoing building production contracted by 4.6 per cent year-on-year.

The volume of residential buildings increased by 36.5 per cent from one year earlier. In residential building, especially the volume of blocks of flats grew by good 50 per cent and that of detached houses by good 30 per cent from one year back. The volume of other than residential building contracted further. It declined by 25.4 per cent from March 2009.

The volume of office buildings and industrial buildings decreased most, or by good 50 per cent year-on-year.

Over the January to March period, the volume of newbuilding contracted by 9.4 per cent from the same time period of the previous year.
