Industrial output grew by 0.9 per cent year-on-year in January

According to Statistics Finland, seasonally adjusted industrial output was 0.9 per cent higher in January 2006 than in January 2005. The downhill trend in industrial output that continued almost throughout last year seems to have come to an end.

In January, output went up most year-on-year, or by 5 per cent, in the metal industry. The growth was speeded up by the manufacture of electrical and electronic products, which increased by nearly 5 per cent. In other metal industry, output grew by almost 3 per cent. Output in energy supply also went up for the first time in good twelve months.

A slight upward trend in industrial output continued. The trend in industrial output is now rising at the same rate in Finland and in the other EU countries.

Revised weights for value added shares have been introduced in the volume index of industrial output. Calculations concerning 2006 have been made using 2004 weights for value added shares.

In the metal industry, the growing trend continued. In 2004, the metal industry accounted for 45 per cent of the total value added of Finnish industry. In the wood and paper industry, the trend turned to a slight decline in January. The share of the wood and paper industry of the total value added was 15 per cent. The trend in the chemical industry has been declining since the middle of last year. The chemical industry generated 12 per cent of the total value added.

From 2003 to 2004, the share of the electronics industry of the total value added fell by good 2 percentage points and was 21 per cent in 2004. The trend in the manufacture of electrical and electronic products has turned towards slight growth since its decline last year. In other metal industry, which accounted for 24 per cent of the total value added, the trend is showing steady growth.
