Industrial output went up by 7.6 per cent year-on-year in September

According to Statistics Finland, seasonally adjusted industrial output was 7.6 per cent higher in September 2006 than in September 2005. Industrial output has grown strongly in the early part of the year. The warm and dry early autumn also boosted peat excavation. Mining and quarrying increased in September by as much as 68 per cent from twelve months back. In the January to September period, seasonally adjusted output for all industries grew by 9 per cent from one year ago.

Among the main industries, the biggest growth of 30 per cent was recorded in September in energy supply. Output in the chemical industry grew by almost 18 per cent. In the metal industry, output went up by good 8 per cent. Manufacture of electrical and electronic products went up by just short of 2 per cent. Output in other metal industry increased by 13.5 per cent. Output declined most, or by close on 3 per cent, in the wood and paper industry. In other manufacturing, output decreased by good 2 per cent.

The rate of growth in Finnish industrial output has been strong throughout the early part of the year. At the onset of autumn, Finnish industrial output also seems to have peaked. Industrial output continues to grow faster in Finland than in the EU countries on the average.

Strong growth in output continued in the metal industry. In 2004, the metal industry accounted for 45 per cent of the total value added of Finnish industry. By contrast, output in the chemical industry appears to have levelled off. The chemical industry accounted for 12 per cent of the value added. In the wood and paper industry output turned to a decline in August. The share of the wood and paper industry of the total value added was 15 per cent.

The share of the electronics industry of the total value added was 21 per cent in 2004. Strong growth in the output of the electronics industry seems to have halted after summer. In other metal industry, which accounted for 24 per cent of the total value added, output continued to go up steadily in 2006.
