Unemployment rate 9.2 per cent in June

According to Statistics Finland’s Labour Force Survey, the number of unemployed persons in June 2014 was 258,000, which was 42,000 higher than one year ago. The unemployment rate was 9.2 per cent, having been 7.8 per cent in June of the year before. There were 18,000 fewer employed persons than in June of the previous year. The unemployment rate in the second quarter (April to June) of 2014 was 9.6 per cent, which was 0.5 percentage points higher than in the respective period of 2013.

In June 2014, the number of employed persons was 2,561,000, which was 18,000 lower than a year earlier (margin of error ±32,000). The number of employed persons decreased both in the private and the public sector compared with June 2013.

In June 2014, the employment rate , that is, the proportion of the employed among persons aged 15 to 64, stood at 71.7 per cent, having been 72.1 per cent one year earlier. Men’s employment rate was 73.1 per cent and women’s 70.3 per cent. Adjusted for seasonal and random variation, the trend of the employment rate was 68.4 per cent.

According to Statistics Finland's Labour Force Survey, there were 258,000 unemployed in June 2014, i.e. 42,000 more than one year earlier (margin of error ±20,000). The number of unemployed men was 129,000 and that of women 129,000.

At 9.2 per cent, the unemployment rate was 1.4 percentage points higher in June than one year earlier. Men’s unemployment rate was 8.9 per cent and women’s 9.5 per cent. The trend of the unemployment rate was 8.6 per cent.

In June, there were a total of 652,000 young people aged 15 to 24 . Of them, 354,000 were employed and 92,000 unemployed. Thus, the labour force of young people (employed and unemployed) totalled 446,000. In June, the unemployment rate for young people aged 15 to 24, that is, the proportion of the unemployed among the labour force, stood at 20.6 per cent, which was 1.1 percentage points higher than one year previously. The trend of the unemployment rate among young people was 19.7 per cent. The share of unemployed young people aged 15 to 24 among the population in the same age group was 14.1 per cent.

There were 1,275,000 persons in the inactive population in June 2014, which was 15,000 fewer than in June 2013. Of the inactive population, 148,000 persons were in disguised unemployment .

Labour Force Survey data for the second quarter of 2014

In the second quarter of 2014, the average number of employed persons was 2,490,000, or 17,000 fewer than in the corresponding quarter of 2013. The number of employed persons increased most in the industry of education (P) and decreased in manufacturing (C).

The number of hours worked by employed persons was 2.9 per cent lower in the second quarter of 2014 than twelve months previously.

The average number of unemployed persons in the second quarter of 2014 was 265,000, which was 13,000 more than in the April to June period of 2013. The unemployment rate in the second quarter of 2014 was 9.6 per cent, which was 0.5 percentage points higher than in the respective period of 2013.

In the second quarter of 2014, the number of persons in the inactive population was 1,339,000, which was 12,000 higher than a year earlier. Of the inactive population, 128,000 persons were in disguised unemployment , which was 8,000 more than in the corresponding period of 2013.

Employment Service Statistics of the Ministry of Employment and the Economy

At the end of June 2014, there were altogether 337,000 persons registered in accordance with the Employment Office Regulations as job seekers at the employment and economic development offices . The number of unemployed job seekers was 35,000 higher than in June 2013.

Unemployment increased from the previous year's June in the areas of all other Employment and Economic Development Centres except in North Karelia (-1%): most in Uusimaa (18%) and Central Finland (14%). At the end of June, the number of temporarily laid off persons registered at the employment and economic development offices was 22,000, which was 6,000 more than twelve months earlier.

The number of persons engaged in services included in the activation stage totalled 113,000 at the end of June, which was 13,000 more than in June of the year before. Altogether, 4.0 per cent of the labour force was covered by labour market policy services.

There were 50,000 unemployed job seekers aged under 25 registered at the employment and economic development offices. Their number was 5,000 higher than in last year's June. During this June, 32,000 new vacancies were reported to the employment and economic development offices, which was 2,000 more than in June 2013.
