Drinking habits 2016 - Survey on drinking habits and attitudes towards alcohol
What is studied?
The Drinking Habits Survey is an interview survey commissioned by the National Institute for Health and Welfare THL, which Statistics Finland now carries out for the third time. Drinking Habits Surveys have a long history in Finland – they have been conducted at eight-year intervals since 1968. The survey collects information about Finns' alcohol use and opinions related to alcohol.
Statistics Finland and the National Institute for Health and Welfare THL carry out the survey in collaboration. Statistics Finland collects the data and THL reports the survey results.
When and how are the data collected?
Statistics Finland gathers the data between August and November. The survey includes 3,900 people aged 15 to 80 living in Finland drawn at random.
Each of the interviewees represents around one thousand Finns and nobody selected to the survey can be replaced by any other person. By participating in the interview survey you can make sure that decision-makers have a comprehensive and accurate picture about drinking habits and attitudes related to alcohol use in Finland.
Those handling data at Statistics Finland are legally obliged to secrecy. All information enabling identification of an individual respondent is removed from the survey data before being released to researchers for research use. The research results will be reported so that individual responses cannot be identified.
How to answer the survey?
The persons selected to the survey will receive a letter by post, after which a statistical interviewer will contact them to agree on the interview. The interview is conducted as a face-to-face interview. Participation does not require any special knowledge or skills and there is no need to prepare for the interview.
