Industrial output grew by 6.6 per cent from previous year in January

According to Statistics Finland, industrial output as calculated per working day was 6.6 per cent higher in January than one year previously.

Output in the metal industry went up by good 14 per cent in the year to January. Within the metal industry the manufacture of electrical equipment grew by almost 20 per cent.

In January output in the wood and paper industry declined by 3.5 per cent. Output in the chemical industry grew by good 2 per cent and in other manufacturing by over 5 per cent. Energy production was unchanged from last year's January.

Capacity utilisation rate in manufacturing was almost 87 per cent in January. In the pulp and paper industry, capacity utilisation rate was nearly 92 per cent, in the metal industry 91 per cent and in the chemical industry close on 83 per cent. Capacity utilisation rate in other manufacturing was 77 per cent.

These preliminary data are based on information available to Statistics Finland by 27 February. A more accurate growth percentage of industrial output and data by industry for January will be published on the Internet in the StatFin statistical service on 15 March 2001 at 7 am.
