Number of enterprises' Internet homepages grew in 2000

Last year 60 per cent of enterprises employing more than ten persons had Internet homepages of their own, while the year before this was the case for 50 per cent of enterprises of the same size. The use of the Internet in enterprises increased from 84 to 91 per cent. These data appear from the report Internet use and e-commerce in enterprises 2001 published by Statistics Finland. The data were collected by an inquiry in spring 2001.

About one half of all enterprises employing more than five persons had their own homepages in 2000. Homepages were especially common in enterprises engaged in tourism. It is estimated that the number of homepages will grow clearly in the course of 2001. Last year 84 per cent of enterprises with more than five employees had an Internet connection in use.

Twelve per cent of enterprises with more than five employees took part in Internet commerce. Every fourth enterprise with homepages sold their products via the Internet as well. One enterprise out of one hundred offered the possibility to pay direct from their homepages. The value of enterprises' Internet sales last year was estimated at about FIM 12 billion. About 90 per cent of sales were directed to Finland and around two thirds concerned trading between enterprises.

EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) is a considerably more valuable mode of e-commerce than Internet commerce. Based on enterprises' own reporting, the value of EDI sales was calculated at around FIM 140 billion in 2000.
