Total output fell by 0.3 per cent in June

The volume of total output was 0.3 per cent smaller in June 2001 than in June 2000. Output fell in June in four of the six main industries of the Monthly Indicator of Total Output calculated by Statistics Finland. The industries of trade and public and other services grew clearly. According to the Monthly Indicator, total output has increased by 2.2 per cent in all during the January to June period this year when compared to the corresponding period last year.

Industrial output went down by good 3 per cent in June. Calculated per working day, output in the manufacture of electrical products decreased by 3 per cent and in the wood and paper industry by 11 per cent.

In agriculture and forestry output fell by 5 per cent in June, mainly due to the 12 per cent decrease in fellings. Construction contracted by 5 per cent. Trade increased by over 2 per cent. Within trade, retail trade grew by 6 per cent and wholesale trade by 2 per cent, while car sales dropped by 7 per cent.

Output in the transport industry was unchanged from the year before. Output in other services and public services rose by more than 2 per cent.

The Monthly Indicator of Total Output is based on twelve monthly series on different sectors of the economy. The series are summed up by weighting.
