Industrial output went down by good 5 per cent in July. Output in the manufacture of electrical products decreased by 19 per cent and in the wood and paper industry by 12 per cent.

Trade increased by nearly one per cent. Within trade, retail trade grew by one per cent and wholesale trade by close on 3 per cent, while car sales dropped by 8 per cent. In agriculture and forestry output went up by 4 per cent in July, due to the increase in meat production and fellings.

Output in the transport industry increased by 2 per cent with the growth of road transport. Output in other services and public services rose by slightly under 2 per cent. Construction contracted by 4 per cent.

From February to June total output has fallen compared to the previous month. However, in July total output remained unchanged from June. The volume of total output was 37 per cent higher in July this year than at the depth of the recession in March 1993.

The Monthly Indicator of Total Output is based on twelve monthly series on different sectors of the economy. The series are summed up by weighting.
