Industrial output fell in November from one year ago

According to Statistics Finland, industrial output as calculated per working day was 4.9 per cent lower in November than one year previously. However, adjusted for seasonal variation, output in November increased by just short of one per cent from October. In the January to November period, industrial output as calculated per working day decreased by 0.7 per cent from the previous year.

Output in the metal industry fell by 1.5 per cent in November. In the rest of the metal industry output decreased by 10 per cent while in the manufacture of electrical equipment it grew by good 5 per cent when compared to November 2000.

In November, output in the wood and paper industry decreased by good 13 per cent from the year before. In the chemical industry output fell by close on 6 per cent and in other manufacturing by 7.5 per cent. Energy supply grew by one half of a per cent.

Capacity utilisation rate in manufacturing was good 85 per cent this November, having been more than 5 percentage points higher in last year's November. In the pulp and paper industry, capacity utilisation rate was 87 per cent and in the metal industry 90 per cent. The rates in the chemical industry and in other manufacturing were 79 per cent.

These preliminary data are based on information available to Statistics Finland by 28 December. A more accurate growth percentage of industrial output and data by industry for November will be published on the Internet in the StatFin statistical service on 15 January 2002 at 8 am.
