One household in two in Finland has a home computer

In August 2001, 52 per cent of all households in Finland had a home computer and 36 per cent had an Internet connection. In two years, the proportion of households with an Internet connection grew by only good 10 percentage points. However, missing home connections could be compensated with connections at work or place of study, for in autumn 2000 as many as 60 per cent of all 15-74-year-olds were already able to use the Internet at home, work, place of study or elsewhere. Nine out of ten households in Finland had a mobile phone. These data originate from Statistics Finland's publication On the Road to the Finnish Information Society III.

On average, computer users spent 1.5 hours per day at the computer out of their total leisure time of 7.5 hours.

In 2000, good 400,000 persons, or 14 per cent of the total population aged 18 to 64, participated in adult education relating to information technology. As many as 26 per cent of those in the labour force desired training in information technology. Compared to this, 14 per cent thought they needed training in foreign languages.

Internet trading of enterprises still insignificant

In 2000, 84 per cent of all enterprises with more than five employees used the Internet and almost one half had their own homepages. However, only 36 per cent of the enterprises with 5 to 9 employees had their own homepages whereas this was the case for 87 per cent of those with more than 100 employees. Twelve per cent of enterprises carried out trading via their homepages and as few as one in five of the enterprises with more than 100 employees said they offered goods or services via the net.
