Import prices fell by 4.9 per cent in twelve months

According to Statistics Finland, import prices fell by 4.9 per cent from last year's June to this year's June. The fall was chiefly attributable to lower prices of crude oil, chemicals and chemical products compared to June 2001.

Export prices fell by 4.6 per cent from last year's June, mainly as a result of lower prices of pulp, paper, paper products and electrical products.

Wholesale prices went down by 2.3 per cent from twelve months back. The main reasons for this were lower prices of energy minerals, down by 15.5 per cent, pulp, paper and paper products, down by 12.9 per cent, and oil products, down by 7.0 per cent.

Import prices went down by 0.4 per cent from May to June

From May to June, import prices went down by 0.4 per cent, mainly because of lower price of crude oil.

Export prices rose by 0.2 per cent from May to June. The main contributors to this were the prices of chemicals and chemical products, up by 1.5 per cent, and an increase of 0.5 per cent in the prices of base metals.

The Wholesale Price Index fell by 0.4 per cent in June, mostly because of lower prices of oil products and crude oil. Price decreases were curbed by higher prices of base metals, chemicals and chemical products.

Producer price indices measure the development of commodity prices from enterprises' viewpoint. The basic price index for domestic supply measures the development of prices exclusive of tax of goods used in Finland as they enter the market. The wholesale price index describes the change in the purchase prices of goods used in Finland inclusive of tax. Both these indices contain domestic and imported goods.
