Import prices up 0.7 per cent in January

Import prices rose 0.7 per cent between December and January, due mainly to the higher prices of crude oil, electricity and oil products. The increase in the year to January was 2.1 per cent. This information can be gathered from the Import Price Index of Statistics Finland.

The increase in wholesale prices from December to January was 0.4 per cent, attributable to the rise in the prices of, among other things, oil products and energy minerals. Wholesale prices have risen 0.6 per cent over the past year, those of domestic products 0.2 pr cent and those of imported goods 1.4 per cent.

Export prices fell 0.1 per cent from December to January and were down 5.4 per cent on January 1996.

The HWWA index, which measures the dollar prices of raw materials on the world market, rose 0.2 per cent from December to January and was 15 per cent up on the corresponding month in the previous year.
