Rapid growth in industrial output in May

Industrial output grew by 6.1 per cent in the year to May, the index per working day of Statistics Finland indicates. The growth in output was mainly sustained by the paper industry and the construction material industry. Output in the paper industry rose by 19.5 per cent and that in the construction material industry by 20.7 per cent.

In the January-May period industrial output increased by 7.7 per cent on the figure for the corresponding period in 1996. Output in the metal industry grew by 8.7 per cent and that in the wood and paper industry by 15.4 per cent.
