Year-on rise of nearly one per cent in export prices

Export prices rose 0.9 per cent in the year to September, having still displayed a minus figure in July. This information can be gathered from the Producer Price Indices of Statistics Finland.

The rise was primarily due to the higher export prices of base metals, chemical pulp and timber, which have risen nearly 12, 25 and close on 20 per cent, respectively. By contrast, the export prices of paper and paperboard are still about 7 per cent below those a year before.

The 0.1 per cent rise in export prices from August to September was due mainly to the higher prices charged for sawn timber.

Import prices are up 1.4 per cent on September 1996, the rise being attributable to the higher prices of agricultural machinery, machinery and equipment, base metals and vehicles.

The reason for the 0.2 per cent drop in import prices from August to September was the fall in the price of crude oil.

Wholesale prices have risen 2.1 per cent in the course of the year, mainly owing to the price increases for various raw materials and capital goods, such as timber, chemical pulp, base metals and roundwood.
