Export and import prices fall by half a per cent within a month

According to Statistics Finland, both export and import prices fell by half a per cent from October to November. Export prices fell mainly due to lower prices of sawn timber, while the drop in import prices was attributable to lower prices of agricultural products, metal ore and base metals.

Export prices were up by 2 per cent on November 1996, due to higher prices of base metals, pulp, machinery and equipment, as well as base chemicals and chemical products. The biggest increase, 24 per cent, occurred in the price of pulp.

Import prices were also up by 2 per cent compared to November 1996. The increase was particularly due to higher prices of agricultural products, base metals and machinery and equipment. Prices for agricultural products went by 20 per cent.
