Number of adoptions rose slightly in 2022 from the year before - falling in the longer term

According to Statistics Finland, there were 269 adoptions in Finland in 2022. The number of adoptions was 30 (13%) higher than in 2021. However, the number of adoptions has decreased by 45 per cent since 2010. Of all adoptions, 163 or 61 per cent were adoptions of persons aged under 18.


Key selections

  • The fall in inter-family adoptions has decreased the total number of adoptions considerably over the past years.
  • In adoptions, 64 per cent of the adopted had been born in Finland. Over one-half of adoptions of persons born in Finland were adoptions of adults aged over 18.
  • Of the adoptions, 79 were adoptions by two parents and 190 were adoptions by one parent.
