Value of energy imports fell by 39 per cent in 2023

According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, energy products were imported to Finland to the value of EUR 11.5 billion in 2023, which was 39 per cent less than one year earlier. The value of imports of nearly all energy products fell. The main energy import products based on value were crude oil, medium distillates and other oil products. The value of exports of energy products amounted to EUR 6.6 billion, which was 16 per cent less than in 2022.

  • The most important energy export products based on value were medium distillates and motor gasoline.
  • In 2023, the import volume of natural gas fell by 73 per cent and that of liquefied natural gas grew nearly six-fold compared to the previous year. The export volume of natural gas grew more than eight-fold and that of liquefied natural gas went down by 67 per cent.
  • Imports of electricity in 2023 amounted to 9.6 TWh, which was 50 per cent less than in the year before. Electricity exports totalled 7.9 TWh, which was 15 per cent more than in the year before.
  • In 2023, the main import countries for energy products examined by value were Norway, Sweden and the USA. Russia's share of the value of imports of energy products was one per cent in 2023, while the corresponding share was 18 per cent one year earlier.
  • Examined by value, Sweden, the USA and Estonia were the most important export countries for energy products in 2023.
