Overnight stays at accommodation establishments increased by nearly 7 per cent in July

The total number of overnight stays at Finnish accommodation establishments rose to three million in July 2010, which was close on seven per cent up on one year previously. Overnight stays by foreign tourists increased by six per cent from the year before and their total number was recorded as nearly 680,000. The number of nights spent by domestic tourists was nearly 2.4 million, up by seven per cent from one year back. These figures are preliminary data from Statistics Finland's statistics on accommodation establishments and they have been collected from accommodation establishments with at least 10 rooms, cottages, or caravan pitches with electricity connection, and youth hostels.

Swedish tourists were the largest group of foreign visitors with nearly 117,000 nights spent in July. The number was nearly 13 per cent higher than in July 2009. Russians came next with 106,000 nights spent, with an increase of 12 per cent from the previous year. German visitors made up the third largest group with 88,000 overnight stays. The number of nights they spent at Finnish accommodation establishments was five per cent higher than one year earlier. Travelling to Finland from far-off countries also increased strongly in July. Overnight stays by tourists from Asia, of whom Japanese visitors made up nearly 40 per cent, rose by 16 per cent from one year ago. Nights spent by visitors from the U.S., Japan and Norway grew by 13 to 14 per cent in July 2010. Among the most important countries of inbound tourism into Finland, overnight stays of visitors from Estonia increased most, or by 15 per cent, and close on 23,000 overnight stays were recorded for them.
