Cubic volume of granted building permits decreased further year-on-year

According to Statistics Finland, in April to June 2019, building permits were granted for a total of 13.4 million cubic metres, which was 14.6 per cent lower than in the corresponding period one year ago. The cubic volume went down for all building types except public service buildings, for which 10.3 per cent more building permits were granted than one year ago. The cubic volume covered by permits granted for commercial and office buildings still declined most, by 24.7 per cent. The cubic volume granted for residential buildings went down by 21.7 per cent from one year back.

Cubic volume granted for residential buildings again lower than one year earlier

During April to June, cubic metres covered by permits for residential buildings amounted to 3.5 million, while one year earlier, the figure was 4.5 million cubic metres. The cubic volume for all residential building types decreased year-on-year. The cubic volume covered by permits for residential blocks of flats decreased by 23.8 per cent, that for terraced houses by 15.4 per cent and that for detached houses by 19.8 per cent.

In April to June, building permits were granted for 11,598 dwellings in total, one year earlier the corresponding figure was 15,261 dwellings. The number of building permits granted for dwellings fell by 24.0 per cent from the previous year.

Volume of building production is growing slightly

In April to June 2019, the constant-price value or the volume of ongoing building production increased by 0.6 per cent year-on-year. The volume of residential building construction declined by 4.7 per cent in the period, while the volume of other than residential building construction increased by 5.2 per cent. Measured by volume, 5.4 per cent more building projects than one year earlier were started in the same period. The number of residential building starts was 7.3 per cent lower than one year ago.

Cubic-volyme of building permits decreased in the first six-month period

In the first six-month period of 2019, building permits were granted for a total of nearly 14,500 projects and 21.5 million cubic metres. The corresponding figures for the previous year were good 18,000 projects and 24.5 million cubic metres. Measured in cubic volume, the decrease was 12.4 per cent. The cubic volume granted for residential building construction decreased by 21.0 per cent during the period. The cubic volume for residential blocks of flats declined most, by 22.9 per cent. The cubic volume for terraced houses declined by 20.8 per cent and that of detached houses by 17.3 per cent.

In the first six months of 2018, building permits were granted for good 26,300 dwellings. During the same period of 2019, building permits were granted for slightly over 19,900 dwellings, the decrease was 24.1 per cent from the previous year.

Examined by building type, the cubic volume granted for commercial and office building construction declined most, by 30.9 per cent. The cubic volume for industrial and warehouse building construction declined by 2.8 per cent and the cubic volume of public service buildings increased by 13.3 per cent from January to June 2018.
