University students numbered 176,500 in 2006

Revised 24.1.2008. The number of students in education leading to a bachelor´s degree or master´s degree has been revised.

The table by region has been changed on 26 April 2007. The numbers of Uusimaa, Päijät-Häme and Ostrobothnia have been changed.

According to Statistics Finland, a total of 176,500 students attended university education leading to a degree in 2006. In 2006 the highest numbers of students were studying in the fields of science and technology, natural sciences and humanities. Of all students, 251) per cent were studying for a lower tertiary degree and 612) for a higher tertiary degree. A total of 14 per cent of all students were studying at the doctorate level of attending specialist training of doctors.

The proportion of women of all students attending education leading to a degree was 54 per cent and their proportion of new students was 57 per cent. In relative terms, the highest number of women studied in the field of health sciences and the lowest in the field of science and technology.

In 2006 the number of foreign students attending university education leading to a degree was 5,400, which is 500 more than in 2005. Women made up 42 per cent of all foreign students. Examined by continent, the highest number of foreign students came from Europe and Asia. The highest numbers of foreign students were studying in the fields of science and technology, humanities and natural sciences.
