Polytechnic students numbered 135,000 in 2009

According to Statistics Finland, a total of 135,000 students attended polytechnic education leading to a degree in autumn 2009. This was 2,500 students more than in 2008. The number of new students was 38,200, which is three per cent more than one year previously. The numbers of students were highest in the fields of technology, transport and welfare, health and physical exercise.

Description: The statistics on polytechnic education contain data on new students in education leading to a polytechnic degree, students of polytechnics, and polytechnic degrees. The information is based on data collected by Statistics Finland from polytechnics. The data on students describe the situation on 20 September. New students refer to those who have reported themselves for the first time as present or absent for the degree in question at the polytechnic concerned. The data on degrees relate to the whole calendar year. In accordance with the Statistics Act, the personal data from which these statistics are compiled are confidential. As a rule, the statistics produced from them are public.
