Nights spent by foreign tourists in Finland up by two per cent in February

The number of recorded nights spent by foreign tourists at Finnish accommodation establishments in February 2010 was 344,000, which is nearly two per cent more than in February 2009. The total number of overnight stays decreased by 1.5 per cent from last year and was 1.3 million. Overnight stays by resident tourists decreased by 2.5 per cent from February 2009. These figures are preliminary data from Statistics Finland's statistics on accommodation establishments and they have been collected from accommodation establishments with at least 10 rooms, cottages, or caravan pitches with electricity connection, and youth hostels.

The prolonged decline in overnight stays by foreign visitors at Finnish accommodation establishments finally started to grow in February. Among the most important countries of inbound tourism to Finland, overnight stays by Estonians increased the most; by 33 per cent. Overnight stays by Dutch tourists grew by one quarter from last year's February. Overnights by Japanese and Russian tourists both increased by 18 per cent and as usual, Russians formed the biggest group of foreign visitors with 60,000 overnight stays in February. British visitors made up the second largest group with 39,000 recorded overnight stays, even though the number fell by 23 per cent from the year before. German visitors made up the third largest group with 36,000 recorded overnight stays, which was six per cent down on the year before.
