Cubic volume covered by granted building permits increased in December to February

According to Statistics Finland, in December to February, building permits were granted for a total of 6.7 million cubic metres, which is 16.6 per cent more than one year ago. The growth came especially from building permits granted for public service buildings. The cubic volume covered by permits granted for residential buildings went up by good 15 per cent from the previous year.

Growth in residential building construction for all types of buildings

In December to February, building permits were granted for a total of two million cubic metres of residential building projects. Residential building construction grew for all types of buildings, especially for terraced houses, which went up by 24 per cent from one year back. Measured by volume, 19.8 per cent more building permits were granted for block of flats projects than one year before. The cubic volume of building permits granted for detached houses made an upturn after a break of several years.

In December to February, good 6,900 building permits were granted for residential building construction. The number of permits granted for apartments has grown by 28.1 per cent year-on-year.

Growth in total production of newbuilding

In December to February, the constant-price value or the volume of ongoing building production increased by 7.5 per cent year-on-year. The volume of construction of residential buildings increased in the period by 10.5 per cent and that of other than residential building construction by 5.1 per cent from one year back. Measured by volume, 31.6 per cent more building projects and 67.9 per cent more residential building projects were started than one year earlier.

The large cubic volume of building permits granted during late 2015 for residential building, especially for blocks of flats, now affects both the started building projects and the volume index of newbuilding.

Data of the statistics on building and dwelling production

The data of the statistics on building and dwelling production are based on the building permit data of the Population Register Centre. The register data are supplemented as municipal building supervisors provide data to the Population Information System and the now published data can become revised. Due to the renewals in the Population Information System, the accumulation data from one year ago do not fully correspond with the accumulation of the current data and this causes bias in the change percentage calculation. For the latest months, the data still have undercoverage and will be supplemented over coming months.
