Sea transport increased in April 2022

Exports decreased by six per cent and were 3.8 million tonnes. Import volume increased by 28 per cent and were four million tonnes. Altogether 1.0 million persons were transported in passenger traffic, which was 72 per cent of the level before the corona pandemic. These figures are preliminary data from Statistics Finlands statistics on foreign shipping traffic.

General goods were transported most in foreign sea traffic in April
In April, the majority of sea transports were transports of general cargo. A total of 1.5 million tonnes of general cargo were transported. Imports of general cargo amounted to 0.8 million tonnes and exports to 0.7 million tonnes. The next most transported goods were crude oil, 0.9 million tonnes, and ores and concentrates, 0.8 million tonnes.
The most import-dominated types of goods were crude oil, ores and concentrates, timber and crude minerals and cement. The most export-dominated type of goods was sawn timber, paper, fertilizers, pulp, wood pulp and waste paper and plywood and other wood panels.
Measured by volume of goods transported, the largest ports were, in order, Sköldvik, Helsinki, HaminaKotka, Hanko and Raahe. Transports at Sköldvik consisted almost entirely of oil-related products and chemicals, while transports at Helsinki and Naantali consisted mostly of general cargo. Most of the transports at HaminaKotka and Rauma consisted of paper and other forestry products, while transports at Kokkola and Raahe consisted mostly of ores and concentrates.
A total of 2.5 million tonnes, or 31 per cent of all sea transports, were transported in containers and transport units. Altogether 1.5 million tonnes of goods were transported in transport units and 1.0 million tonnes in containers.
Of the goods transported in transport units, 0.8 million tonnes were transported in lorries, 0.6 million tonnes in trailers and 0.1 million tonnes in other transport units. In addition to the transport units used for goods transport, 144,834 passengers’ cars and 1,480 buses and coaches were transported.
A total of 77,227 containers were transported, which corresponds to 134,754 TEU units.
A total of 1.0 million persons were transported in passenger traffic
A total of 1,018,334 persons were transported in passenger traffic in April 2022. In all, 513,548 passengers travelled between Finland and Sweden, 495,531 passengers between Finland and Estonia and 9,255 passengers between Finland and Germany. Compared with April 2021, the number of passengers increased five-fold. Compared with April 2019 the number of passengers was, however, just 72 per cent. In April 2022, no passengers of foreign cruise ships arrived in Finland.
