Cubic volume covered by granted building permits decreased by good 19 per cent in November

In November 2011, building permits were granted for a total of around 2.6 million cubic metres, which is 19.4 per cent less than one year ago. This is indicated by Statistics Finland’s preliminary data from statistics on building and dwelling production.

The cubic volume covered by permits for residential buildings fell by 20 per cent year-on-year. The only residential building type for which the volume covered by granted permits grew was terraced houses. The cubic volume covered by permits granted for other than residential building construction fell by good 19 per cent from November 2010.

The cubic volume covered by permits granted for commercial and office buildings was nearly 70 per cent lower than in November 2010. The drop is almost entirely explained by a building permit granted for one individual large project in November 2010.

By contrast, the cubic volumes covered by permits granted for public service buildings, and for industrial and warehouse buildings increased year-on-year.

In November 2011, building permits were granted for 1,986 new dwellings, which is 27 per cent fewer than one year earlier.

Volume of newbuilding went up by nearly 3 per cent in November

In November 2011, the constant-price value, or volume, of ongoing building production was up by 2.8 per cent year-on-year. The volume of residential building construction remained nearly on level with the previous year.

The growth in the volume of residential building construction has been slowing down since the spring of last year. In November, the year-on-year growth amounted to 0.6 per cent. The volume of construction of residential blocks of flats grew by 11.3 per cent and that of terraced houses by 11.4 per cent. The volume of construction of detached houses, in turn, decreased by 4.7 per cent from one year back.

The volume of construction of industrial and warehouse buildings increased most, by 28.6 per cent. The volume of industrial building construction grew by nearly 18.3 per cent and that of warehouse building construction by 48.6 per cent from November 2010.

The volume of public service building construction fell by 12.9 per cent in November. The volume of construction of commercial and office buildings grew by 2.9 per cent and that of other than residential buildings by 5 per cent from 2010.
