Households' loan stock increased moderately in the first quarter of 2023

According to Statistics Finland, households’ loan debts increased in the first quarter of 2023 by EUR 0.2 billion from the previous quarter. Households' indebtedness ratio decreased by 1.6 percentage points. At the end of the first quarter of 2023, general government's net financial assets, i.e., the difference between assets and liabilities, amounted to EUR 163.4 billion. General government’s net financial assets went up by EUR 1.7 billion in total from the previous quarter.

The chart shows households' indebtedness ratio. Households’ debts grew by EUR 2.9 billion from the previous quarter and were EUR 205.5 billion. Households' indebtedness ratio fell by 1.6 percentage points to 129,9 % per cent. Households' indebtedness ratio is calculated as the ratio of their loan debts at the end of a quarter to their total disposable income during the preceding four quarters.
